Mar 29, 2015 - I developed a new leg vise that uses a type one lever instead of the old type three lever design that has been around for hundreds of years . I see that they have a hex shank, so now I have a reason to pick up an adapter for my brace to stay unplugged. All this is a piece dedicated to the art of recycling wood products.
Most of the schools I teach at Internationally have 8 workbenches which seems to work quite well. It’s currently under construction and is a very similar design (based on the workbench tutorial by Paul Sellers). It worked well for this style bench and we were on a budget as we needed to build a lot of benches. I am reluctant to cut into my butcher block top and this seems to reduce that. I’m looking to add a leg vise to my bench and I’ve looked up the parts online, however I have a question. Reply ;-)I am interested in this build for my bench. I glued it below the work surface to add extra height and strength.The base shape of the legs is a large "A" (or "R"). 9 months ago I’m wondering if I added extra work ‘for nothing.’ Thanks for the question Allen- you’re right, other than a little paring, there’s no wedge shape formed in the mortise.
9 months ago Leg vises are also more powerful due to the large lever provided by the lower position of the parallel guide. I decided to follow that model and made 6 Nicholson style workbenches, and 2 Roubo.
it adds storage and also prevents stuff from rolling under the workbench :) personally, I added it a few months after the workbench was complete- the leg vise is my own design, inspired by the moxon vise.- the video shows how I assemble the workbench after transporting to my new apartment.

Can you tell me if there is any guideline in spacing the screw apart from the guide rail?
Did you think about using T-nuts where the table top and legs attach?
From looking at the video it looks like the walls of its mortise are square and not slightly widened to accommodate the wedge or make a mini-dovetail internally.
But if you made it lower, you might have to put the vise screw through the apron instead, or watch out for hardware interference.
The auxiliary wood jaws necessary for iron vises are unnecessary with a leg vise since the vise itself, along with the bench's leg and top, forms the jaws of the vise. I would not have thought to look for paddle bits with a snail at a big box store.

The oak bench in the photos was built for a customer, and whilst this example had the top nailed down, the design is closely based on a knock-down version that I previously built for sale. And the first using all hand tools. Any reason why the apron end supports are only 1″ thick, while the inside supports are 1.5″?
