Paulos presents a strong case that mass innemeracy is a severe problem in modern society (he mostly refers to his own country, the USA, but the case is just as true in the UK) and the effects are all too real. (For example, when describing magnitude he says, a million seconds is about eleven and a half days, but a billion seconds is almost thirty-two This book speaks for itself. He covers a number of numerical fallacies and adds explanations, but often it feels like the explanation would come up short to anyone who really didn't understand the particular issue being covered. The book is about innumeracy and how it affects a lot of people and thus is used against them whether be it in pseudoscientific activities, gambling, and some common games. I wanted to like this book but the opening pages nearly made me quit reading. Feynman – as a teacher – in converting technical (math) concepts into relatable images, Gladwell in writing for “the general public” consumption, and Levitt & Dubner (of “Freakonomics” fame) in both of the above plus quirky examples to illustrate his point. "This is the book for people who want to go one step beyond HOW TO LIE WITH STATISTICS. An easy little read about mathematical illiteracy. If part of the book's purpose is to raise the comfort level of the reader with certain concepts, then there are probably too many places where it throws in a formula too quickly, causing less numerate minds to glance away.I read this when first published in the late 80s and was then struck by how important the ideas in were to everyone. From statistics to probability to the multiplication principle, this book has it all and is written in such a way that makes even the most boring subject interesting to any reader.
