Detroit makes for a disturbing and unnerving portrayal of real historical events, but has less success as a work of sociopolitical commentary..
Detroit is not a movie that cares about the issues tied to ending Black lives; it's a movie that's interested in beating and shooting Black bodies. Using a nervous handheld camera and intercutting what we see with real archive footage to create the same documentary-like feel of her previous films The Hurt Locker and Zero Dark Thirty, Bigelow exposes with gripping realism a revolting chapter in American History. What leaves the film feeling grotesque and even a bit exploitative is its soullessness. The language of cinematic action — which Ms. Bigelow speaks as fluently and inventively as any living American director — is an idiom of feeling and visceral response. Three black men were shot to death — nine other people were terrorized and beaten — after the police and guardsmen arrived at the motel, responding to reports of sniper fire.Real events depicted in movies can’t exactly be given away, and this episode, while not as notorious as some other race-related murders of its era, isn’t all that obscure. 2:28
Alerted by a gunshot (actually a prank with a starter pistol), the Detroit Police and the National Guard Swiss-cheese the motel with bullets, then move in to raid the building. They’re dutiful wives placing a gentle hand on the shoulder of their husbands; they’re silent spectators in courtrooms; they’re sweet motel clerks with no real weight in the story. There are, of course, a litany of films by white filmmakers about subject matter unique to the black experience that I find moving—““Detroit” is ultimately a confused film that has an ugliness reflected in its visual craft and narrative. It wasn’t the relentless violence inflicted upon black bodies or the fiery devastation of the riots ripping apart Detroit but the emptiness behind these moments that got under my skin. Occasionally things go in the other direction, with “they” referring to the white authorities, but the reversal doesn’t indicate any kind of symmetry.The movie, which paints a sometimes muddled picture of a chaotic and contested moment in history, is admirably clear in this regard. Cinematographer Bigelow is immensely skilled at action, and watching Philip pick off his victims definitely crackles with energy.
